Known as the Park of Monsters or Parco die Mostri in Italian, the sculptures and monsters that can be found here are grotesque indeed. Garden of Bomarzo was commissioned in 1552 by Prince Pier Francesco Orsini. The Prince had been through a brutal period where he had been to war where a friend was killed, and he had been held ransom for years. Then on his return, his wife died. The Paco die Mostri was perhaps his way of expressing his grief. In the end, the park stands testament to his vision as interpreted by the architect hired to complete it, Pirro Ligorio. The park was a favourite of Salvador Dali's, and today is a great place to visit and take photos. (Bomarzo, Province of Viterbo, Italy)
