Pozzo di San Patrizio
Pozzo di San Patrizio is a Renaissance masterpiece of engineering in Orvieto, a cylindrical well dropping 53 meters into the earth with two interlocking spiral staircases that allowed donkeys to descend and ascend without ever crossing paths. The structure's interior is what makes it extraordinary to photograph: looking straight down from the top railing reveals a perfectly symmetrical spiral of arched windows and worn stone steps converging on a disc of dark water far below, while shooting upward from the bottom gives you the same composition in reverse, with light filtering through the 72 windows creating a rhythm of bright and shadow. A wide angle lens, around 16 to 24mm, works best for both perspectives. Midday light actually helps here since the sun filters down into the shaft. Bring a tripod as the interior is dim, and arrive early to avoid crowds on the stairs. (Orvieto, Umbria, Italy)
