Piazza San Marco
Few places in the world pack as much architectural detail into a single frame as this legendary square in the heart of Venice. The Basilica's ornate Byzantine facade is the natural anchor for most compositions, and you can work it from straight on for symmetry, or move to the sides of the piazza to bring the Campanile tower and the long arcaded wings of the Procuratie into the frame. Early morning is essential here, before the crowds arrive and while the light is still soft and directional. The square floods periodically during high water, which actually creates stunning reflection opportunities if you time your visit right. A wide angle lens suits the grand scale well, though a longer focal length helps isolate the Basilica's mosaic details. Access is straightforward via the vaporetto stop at San Marco.
