The rooftop terrace of Saint Mark's Basilica puts you level with the gilded mosaics, marble statues, and ornate Gothic spires that most visitors only see from far below, giving you a perspective almost no street-level shot can replicate. You can shoot along the facade with the horses and arched stonework as foreground elements, or turn around to look out over Piazza San Marco and the Venetian rooftops stretching toward the lagoon. A wide-angle lens works well for the sweeping facade details, while a short telephoto lets you isolate the decorative stonework or compress the piazza below. Soft morning light hits the golden mosaics beautifully, and the terrace is less crowded early in the day before tour groups arrive. Access requires a separate museum ticket and a climb up steep internal stairs; bags may need to be checked. (Venice, Veneto, Italy)
