Saint Mark's Basilica

Saint Mark's Basilica - Photo by @ns.photos251 / 1

Saint Mark's Basilica dominates the eastern end of Piazza San Marco with its layered Gothic arches, golden mosaics, and Byzantine domes, making it one of the most photographically complex facades in Europe. Shooting from the far western end of the piazza gives you the full width of the facade with room to include the surrounding colonnades as natural framing. Early morning, especially just after sunrise, is when you will find the softest light and the fewest crowds; the golden hour glow catches the mosaic details beautifully. A wide or ultra-wide lens works well for the full facade, while a telephoto lets you isolate the intricate arch carvings and mosaic panels. Getting low and using the patterned marble pavement as a foreground element adds depth to your compositions. Dress code enforcement is strict, so cover shoulders and knees or you will be turned away at the door. (Venice, Veneto, Italy)
