About Prašná brána - The Powder Tower
Blackened by centuries of weather and city smoke, the Powder Tower (Prašná brána) stands imposingly looking out over the Old Town. Up close, the dark stone is covered in intricate carvings of kings and coats of arms. Right beside it sits the Municipal House, pale and ornate Art Nouveau, joined to the tower by a covered bridge. Framing them together from across the square creates an amazing contrast between the near-black Gothic stone against that light exterior. Capturing the dark stone can be tricky, you may have to experiment a bit to find the ideal way to highlight it. Flat, overcast light turns the carvings into one grey mass, so it may take some patience to wait for just the right light to spread across the exterior, or come back at blue hour when the floodlights will help you pick out each figure. Using a telephoto lens lets you pull the statues above the arch in close. The tower sits at a bustling corner, giving you a variety of streets to walk down and experiment with wider views to highlight the tower's imposing height. You can actually drive/walk right through it which can add a unique contrast of old architecture and modern vehicles in the same shot. You can also climb 186 steps to a gallery for an amazing view looking across the Old Town rooftops to the Týn Church spires. (Prague, Prague, Czechia)
