Pratt’s Falls
Pratt's Falls drops roughly 137 feet down a sheer rock face in a quiet Onondaga County park, making it one of the tallest waterfalls in New York State outside of the Adirondacks. The character of the falls changes dramatically with water levels: after heavy rain it becomes a powerful curtain of white water, while in drier months it fans into delicate ribbons tracing the contours of the rock. Position yourself at the base for a wide angle shot looking straight up the cliff, or step back along the stream to include the mossy foreground and surrounding hemlock forest in your composition. Overcast days are ideal for waterfalls here, softening the light and reducing harsh contrast. A wide angle lens works well at the base, and a polarizer helps cut glare on the wet rock. The paved, railed trail from the parking lot makes access easy for any photographer. (Pratt's Falls County Park, New York, United States)
