Quinn Chapel
Quinn Chapel A.M.E. is a striking late 19th-century church on South Wabash Avenue, recognized as the oldest African American congregation in Chicago and a landmark of significant historical weight. The red brick Romanesque Revival facade, with its arched windows, decorative stonework, and corner tower, gives you a lot to work with from the exterior. Position yourself across the street to capture the full facade, or move in close to isolate the arched entryway and carved details with a standard or short telephoto lens. Overcast days are ideal here since the building sits on a relatively narrow urban street where direct sunlight can create harsh shadows and blown highlights. Early morning on weekdays keeps foot traffic low and gives you cleaner shots without pedestrians crowding the frame. The surrounding South Side streetscape also provides context if you want to shoot wider and tell a fuller story of the building within its neighborhood. (Chicago, Illinois, United States)
