St. Charles Air Line Bridge
This historic double-leaf bascule railroad bridge spans the Chicago River's South Branch, offering a surprisingly raw and industrial foreground against the downtown skyline rising to the north. The bridge itself carries a lot of visual weight, with its steel truss structure, counterweights, and weathered details making strong compositional elements even when the skyline is not your main subject. Position yourself along the riverbank or on the W 14th Street bridge nearby to get the classic shot with the skyscrapers stacked behind the bridge's framework. A telephoto lens in the 70-200mm range helps compress the distance and make the skyline feel more prominent. Golden hour and blue hour both work well here; morning light comes in from the east and catches the steel nicely, while twilight gives you city glow reflecting on the water. The area is industrial and access points are limited, so scout the riverbank paths on both sides before committing to a spot. (Chicago, Illinois, United States)
