Sabbath Day Point Overlook

Perched along Route 9N on the western shore of Lake George, this roadside overlook gives you sweeping views across the lake toward the Adirondack ridgelines to the east. The scene works especially well in the morning when the sun rises behind those eastern hills, casting soft light across the water and creating a gradual transition from shadow to warmth. A wide or standard zoom in the 24-50mm range handles the expansive landscape well, but a telephoto can compress the layers of ridges for a more dramatic effect. You can shoot directly from the pull-off area without any hiking required, making it highly accessible. Look for mist sitting low over the water in early morning during fall and spring, as it adds real depth to the composition. Autumn color on the surrounding hills makes this one of the stronger seasonal stops along the lake corridor. (Silver Bay, New York, United States)
