A dense jungle temple complex in the heart of Ubud, the Sacred Monkey Forest draws photographers for its combination of ancient moss-covered shrines, dramatic banyan trees, and hundreds of long-tailed macaques moving freely through the grounds. The monkeys are the obvious subject, and getting low and close with a short telephoto or standard zoom lets you fill the frame with expressive faces and candid interactions. The forest canopy filters light beautifully throughout the day, but the soft, diffused conditions of overcast mornings are ideal for avoiding harsh contrast in the dark jungle interior. Wide shots looking up into the towering banyans with temple structures below make strong compositional anchors. Arrive early when crowds are thin and the monkeys are most active. Watch your belongings, as the macaques are bold, and keep a respectful distance to capture natural behavior rather than staged encounters. (Ubud, Bali, Indonesia)
