San Giorgio dei Greci
This 16th-century Greek Orthodox church sits quietly along a narrow canal in Castello, instantly recognizable by its slightly tilting campanile that leans noticeably away from the main body of the church. The combination of Byzantine architectural detail, weathered brick, and the reflective canal makes it a rewarding subject well beyond the crowded tourist circuits. Position yourself along the canal bank to capture the full facade with its reflection in the water below, and use the leaning bell tower as a deliberate compositional element rather than trying to correct it. A 24-35mm lens works well for fitting the scene without distortion. Overcast days are ideal here since soft diffused light brings out the texture of the brickwork and eliminates harsh shadows in the narrow calle. Early morning gives you the canal to yourself before foot traffic picks up. Access is straightforward on foot from Campo San Zaccaria. (Venice, Veneto, Italy)
