Split Rock Falls
Split Rock Falls drops along the Bouquet River in the Adirondacks, offering two main cascades plus a third just downstream, with the uppermost drop split cleanly by a large midstream boulder that creates a natural compositional anchor. Get low near the water's edge to frame the split flow symmetrically, or position yourself slightly downstream to capture all three drops with the surrounding forest in the background. A wide angle lens works well in the tight gorge, and a polarizing filter helps cut glare on the wet rocks. Overcast days are ideal here since the tree canopy and steep walls can create harsh shadows in direct sun; soft diffused light brings out the detail in the cascades and dark rock faces. The falls are a short walk from the roadside pulloff on Route 9, making access straightforward in most seasons. (Elizabethtown, New York, United States)
