About Statua di San Francesco d'Assisi
The Statua di San Francesco d'Assisi is a large bronze of the saint standing with a wolf, set on the hill that divides Monterosso al Mare's old town from the Fegina beach side. The statue stands just below the Capuchin convent, where friars have lived since the early 1600s. The wolf comes from an old story about Francis taming a wolf that had been terrorizing the town of Gubbio. From the viewpoint around the statue you look out over Monterosso's bay, with the beach umbrellas lined up below and the cliffs of the Cinque Terre running off down the coast. From the small terrace around the statue you can easily pair the saint against open sea and sky, or step back to fit the statue and the curve of the beach into one composition. The terrace faces to the south looking out over the bay to early mornings and late into the evenings give amazing colours and peaceful views. The statue is accessible from winding staircase that climbs up from the old town. All those stairs are definitely worth it for the incredible views overlooking the bay.
