Ste-Anne-de-Bellevue Parish
This historic stone church anchors the western tip of the island of Montreal, sitting just steps from the busy waterfront canal that connects Lac Saint-Louis to the Ottawa River. The building's rough-cut grey limestone facade and classic steeple are characteristic of early Quebec ecclesiastical architecture, and the surrounding streetscape of old Ste-Anne-de-Bellevue gives you plenty of context to work with. Shoot from across the narrow main street to compress the church against the sky, or get close to the base of the steeple with a wide angle to emphasize its height. Overcast days flatten harsh shadows and bring out the texture in the stone beautifully. Morning light hits the front facade well if you are shooting in the warmer months. The church is in a walkable village with cafes and a lively canal-side promenade nearby, so it pairs easily with a longer shoot of the area. (Ste-Anne-de-Bellevue, Quebec, Canada)
