Sylvan Grove Theater is an open-air amphitheater tucked into a quiet forested corner of the University of Washington campus, built around four towering Ionic columns salvaged from Seattle's original 1861 university building. The columns are the real draw here, rising dramatically against a backdrop of tall trees that frame them naturally and filter light in beautiful ways. Shooting from low on the amphitheater steps looking up at the columns gives you a strong sense of scale, while positioning yourself further back lets you use the curved stone seating as a leading line toward the pillars. Overcast days work especially well since the tree canopy can create harsh contrast in direct sun; golden hour light breaking through the branches adds warmth and depth. A wide angle lens helps capture the full columned scene, but a short telephoto isolates the column details nicely. The theater is lightly trafficked and free to access year-round.
