Toronto Central Prison Chapel
This striking Gothic Revival chapel is the sole survivor of the Toronto Central Prison complex, built in 1877 and now sitting somewhat incongruously amid the city's Liberty Village neighbourhood. The weathered red brick facade, pointed arch windows, and ornate stonework make it a compelling subject, especially when contrasted against the modern condominiums rising around it. Shoot from street level on Strachan Avenue to capture the full facade with the contemporary skyline pressing in behind it, a composition that tells a powerful story about layers of urban history. A wide to mid-range lens works well here, around 24 to 50mm, letting you include environmental context. Overcast days are ideal since they reduce harsh shadows on the textured brickwork and bring out the richness of the red brick. The building is not publicly accessible inside, so your shooting will be from the exterior sidewalk, but the facade alone rewards careful framing. (Toronto, Ontario, Canada)
