Fort York
Fort York is one of Toronto's oldest surviving landmarks, a collection of historic military buildings and earthworks tucked beneath the Gardiner Expressway with the downtown skyline rising behind it. The contrast between the early 19th century blockhouses and brick buildings against the modern city backdrop is the most compelling compositional opportunity here. Shoot from the open parade ground looking north to compress the heritage structures against glass towers, or position yourself low near the earthen ramparts to emphasize the fortifications in the foreground. The warm brick tones of the buildings respond well to golden hour light, and early morning gives you softer shadows with fewer visitors in frame. A wide to mid-range zoom works well for capturing the buildings in context; a tilt-shift lens is worth considering if you want to correct for converging lines. The site is fully accessible with clear sightlines across the open grounds. (Toronto, Ontario, Canada)
