Tromsø Cathedral is a striking white wooden church dating from 1861, and its clean Nordic Gothic lines make it one of the most photogenic buildings in the Arctic north. The white facade contrasts beautifully against moody winter skies, and during the polar night season you have a real chance of capturing the northern lights arching over the steeple, which is one of the most sought-after compositions in the city. Shoot from across the small square to get the full facade with the tower centered, or work the side angles to emphasize the sharp pitched rooflines. Blue hour in winter gives you deep indigo skies that set off the illuminated white exterior perfectly. A wide angle lens in the 16 to 24mm range works well for the full building in context. The cathedral sits right in the city center, so access is straightforward year round. (Tromsø, Troms, Norway)
