Villa Doria Pamphili
Rome's largest public park surrounds a stunning Baroque villa and offers a surprisingly varied range of photographic subjects, from formal Italian gardens and reflecting ponds to umbrella pine forests and crumbling stonework. The Casino del Bel Respiro, the main villa building, photographs beautifully with a wide or standard lens, especially from the formal garden axis in front where symmetrical hedgerows give you natural framing and depth. Early morning is ideal here; the park draws joggers and dog walkers later in the day, but at sunrise you can have the fountain terraces and tree-lined avenues almost entirely to yourself, with soft directional light raking across the stonework. The reflecting ponds are worth seeking out for cleaner compositions with water mirroring the surrounding pines. Wear comfortable shoes as the grounds are extensive, and allow time to explore beyond the main villa toward the wilder woodland sections. (Rome, Lazio, Italy)
