Votivkirche is one of Vienna's most striking pieces of neo-Gothic architecture, its twin spires rising sharply against the sky along the Ringstrasse boulevard in a way that rewards both wide and tight compositions. Shooting from directly across Rooseveltplatz gives you a straight-on symmetrical frame, while moving to the sides lets you work the spires into a more dynamic diagonal. The intricate stonework, pointed arches, and rose window above the main entrance are worth filling the frame with using a short telephoto around 85mm. Early morning light hits the facade with warm, soft tones before the plaza gets busy, and overcast days are ideal for keeping contrast manageable on all that pale stone. The church sits on a wide open square with no major obstructions, so you have plenty of room to back up and use a 24mm or wider to capture the full height of both spires. (Vienna, Austria)
