Wasserbehälter Hackenberg
Built in 1908, this abandoned water reservoir on the western edge of Vienna is a striking example of late Historicist architecture, its ornate brick facade and arched windows slowly being swallowed by dense vegetation. You will be shooting from the public road since the site is fenced off, but that constraint actually works in your favor; a longer focal length, something in the 70-200mm range, lets you compress the layers of overgrowth against the architecture and isolate the most interesting details. Look for gaps in the greenery that frame decorative stonework or reveal the roofline, and use the fence line itself as a foreground element. Late summer through early autumn is the sweet spot, when climbing plants are at peak coverage. Overcast days soften the light and bring out the richness of the brick tones without harsh shadows cutting across the facade. (Vienna, Austria)
