About Yburg
The Yburg is a roofless sandstone castle ruin sitting tucked away in the vineyards above Stetten. Only the four outer walls are still standing, creating a unique cube of rough, honey coloured stone. The hillside is covered in vineyards stretching out in long green rows. The ruins look out to the west over the village and the valley, so the last hour of sun turns the sandstone gold and the view is highlighted with amazing warm tones. From the vineyard trails above the ruin, you can use the vine rows as leading lines down the hillside and take some time to simply capture the amazing views over the entire valley. If you have a telephoto lens in your kit, you can circle down to the paths below the ruins and sit it against rich blue sky. When it's open, make sure to take some time to explore the inside. The walls rise straight up with nothing overhead, so a wide lens pointed up turns them into a tall stone frame for the sky. Plan an autumn visit if you can, when the vine leaves change to rich yellow and rust tones. Plus bronze figures by sculptor Karl Ulrich Nuss are placed all around the grounds, so it is worth taking some time to discover all those little gems. There are no public roads within the vineyards so you will have to leave you car in the village and walk along the farm trails to the ruins. The grounds are free to explore, although the ruin sometimes closes for wine events. Ideally try to stay through sunset and into dusk when the lights come on in the village below.
