Yorkville Fire Station No. 312
Built in 1878, this handsome Victorian fire station is the oldest in Toronto, still active on a busy Yorkville corner with a decorative clock tower that gives it an instantly recognizable silhouette. The red brick facade, arched doorways, and ornate stonework reward a wide or standard lens, around 24 to 50mm, for capturing the full elevation in context with the surrounding streetscape. Position yourself directly across the street to shoot the symmetrical front face, or step to one side to use the corner angle and add depth. Overcast days work well here by softening shadows and keeping detail in the brickwork, but morning light from the east catches the facade nicely. The station sees regular fire truck activity, so patience can reward you with an apparatus framed in the open bay doors for a compelling shot that blends heritage architecture with working city life.
