Yosemite Valley Chapel
Tucked beneath the towering granite walls of Yosemite Valley, this small white wooden chapel from 1879 punches well above its size as a photographic subject, pairing intimate historic architecture with one of the most dramatic natural backdrops on earth. Position yourself to the south or southeast to frame the steeple against the valley cliffs and conifer forest, or step back for a wider shot that includes the surrounding meadow. A 24-70mm lens handles most situations well, though a longer focal length lets you compress the background and make the cliffs loom larger behind the structure. Morning light is ideal, washing the white exterior in warm tones before harsh midday contrast sets in. Winter visits are especially rewarding when snow covers the roof and grounds. The chapel sits just off Southside Drive with roadside parking nearby, making it one of the more accessible stops in the valley. (Yosemite National Park, California, United States)
