Perched at nearly 10,000 feet along State Route 14, this overlook delivers a sweeping panorama where the high plateau drops dramatically into the canyon country of Zion National Park below. The contrast between the dense spruce and ponderosa pine framing the foreground and the vast canyon system stretching into the distance gives you strong depth and layering to work with. Position yourself at the railing to use the tree line as a natural frame, or step back to incorporate the forest canopy overhead. A wide angle lens works well here to capture the full scope of the descent, while a longer focal length lets you compress the canyon layers. Sunset is the prime window, when warm light rakes across the canyon walls and the sky above picks up color. The small parking lot fills quickly, so arrive early to secure a spot without blocking the highway. (Cedar Canyon, Utah, United States)
