The Virgin River carves through the sandstone heart of Zion National Park, offering some of the most iconic canyon photography in the American Southwest. The shallow, rust-colored water reflects the towering red and orange walls above, and the river itself becomes a natural leading line drawing the eye deeper into the canyon. Wade into the water for a low, centered composition looking upstream, where the canyon walls converge dramatically toward the sky. Early morning light is ideal, when the sun catches the upper canyon walls while the riverbed stays in soft shadow, creating a rich contrast between the glowing rock and the cool, clear water. Wear waterproof shoes since getting into the river is essential for the best angles. A wide angle lens in the 16-24mm range lets you emphasize the scale of the walls while keeping the winding water in frame. (Zion National Park, Utah, United States)
