The Subway

This sculpted sandstone slot canyon in Zion National Park earns its name from the smooth, tube-like walls that curve overhead like an underground tunnel, carved by millennia of water cutting through Navajo sandstone. The most iconic shot is from inside the tube looking back toward the open canyon, where a shallow stream reflects the glowing amber and rust walls above, creating a natural mirror effect. A wide angle lens in the 16-24mm range helps you capture the full sweep of the curved ceiling while keeping the foreground reflection in frame. Midday light filtering softly down through the open slot gives you even, warm tones without harsh shadows, making this one of the few locations where shooting around noon actually works in your favor. The route requires a permit and a strenuous hike with stream crossings, so waterproof boots and trekking poles are worth bringing. (Springdale, Utah, United States)
