A Scenic Reservoir Surrounded by Mountains

Buntzen Lake is a picturesque BC Hydro reservoir nestled in the forested mountains of Anmore, British Columbia. Spanning 4.8 kilometers in length and covering 182 hectares, this tranquil lake was formerly known as Lake Beautiful, a fitting name for its stunning reflections, clear waters, and surrounding alpine scenery. Originally developed as part of a hydroelectric project in 1904, the lake played a key role in bringing the first hydroelectric power to Vancouver. Today, it is a popular destination for nature lovers, hikers, and photographers seeking to capture its serene beauty.

Best Photography Opportunities & Best Time to Visit

Buntzen Lake offers a variety of photographic opportunities throughout the year. The still waters create mirror-like reflections of the surrounding mountains and dense evergreen forests, making it an excellent location for landscape photography. Early mornings and late afternoons provide the best lighting, with golden-hour sunlight filtering through the trees and casting a warm glow over the lake. Misty mornings add a magical atmosphere, while autumn transforms the landscape with vibrant fall colors.

The scenic suspension bridge at the lake's north end is a great subject for compositions, and the many hiking trails around the area offer different vantage points of the lake and surrounding peaks. Long-exposure shots can create a smooth water effect, while a wide-angle lens helps capture the vastness of the scenery. Wildlife such as bald eagles, deer, and waterfowl can often be spotted along the shoreline, adding another dimension to nature photography.

How to Get There

Buntzen Lake is located in Anmore, approximately 30 kilometers from downtown Vancouver. It is accessible by car via Sunnyside Road, with parking available at the designated lots near the lake. However, parking is on a first-come, first-served basis, and the entrance gates close once the lots are full, sometimes for the entire day. Arriving early, especially on weekends and during summer, is highly recommended.
