About 520 West 28th Street

520 West 28th Street is a unique condo building that sits overlooking the High Line in West Chelsea. This eye catching building is eleven storeys wrapped in hand-worked steel that loops around the corners creating an intricate pattern. The panels were blackened, brushed and tinted by hand so they'd pair with the surrounding old rail structures rather contrast starkly against them. The steel is highlighted by the constant reflections in all the surrounding glasswork. Bright overcast gives you long soft gradients rolling across the curves. The look of the building constantly changes all day with variations in light, cloud cover and just from the angle of where you set up (taking a few steps left or right sometimes changes the tones completely). The High Line runs north and south directly beside it giving you an amazing vantage point up above ground level. You can use a wide lens from further along the walkway for the full view of the buildings intricate balconies and steelwork or go close in on one band where the steel meets the curved glass, depending on what suits your photography style best. Try to come back after dark as well, when the city lights up around all that glass and the metal goes almost black. This shooting location is easily accessible with lots of space to experiment with your compositions since the High Line is a public park with stair entrances at several cross streets. The building is private, so you will only be able to shoot from the walkway or public roads down at street level. Try to come early in the day or later in the day since this is a busy pathway and elbow room counts for a lot when you're working in a park that's only a few metres wide. (New York, New York, USA)
