High Line
This elevated linear park runs 1.45 miles along a former freight rail line on Manhattan's west side, offering a unique elevated vantage point above street level that puts you eye-to-eye with building facades, street grids, and the Hudson River beyond. The raised perspective lets you compress layers of architecture in ways that ground-level shooting simply cannot, and the park's plantings add organic texture against the hard urban geometry. Wide-angle lenses work well for capturing the corridor stretching into the distance, while a telephoto lets you isolate building details and street scenes below. Early morning gives you the best light from the east and far fewer crowds, making it easier to shoot clean compositions along the walkway. Enter at any of the multiple access points between Gansevoort Street and 34th Street, and work your way along slowly, paying attention to the framed views through gaps in the railing and greenery.
