The Shed

The Shed is a striking cultural center at Hudson Yards whose telescoping outer shell, clad in ETFE cushion panels, creates a futuristic silhouette unlike anything else in New York. For exteriors, position yourself along the High Line or the plaza level to capture the full scale of the movable structure against the surrounding towers; a wide-angle lens in the 16-35mm range works well here. The semi-translucent facade catches light beautifully in the late afternoon when the sun hits it from the west, giving the panels a warm, glowing quality. At blue hour and into the night, the building illuminates from within, making it ideal for long exposures with city lights in the frame. The plaza is open and uncrowded compared to other Manhattan landmarks, so you have room to experiment with low angles that emphasize the curved steel grid overhead.
