Agathla Peak

This dramatic volcanic neck juts nearly 1,500 feet above the surrounding Colorado Plateau, its dark jagged spire creating one of the most striking silhouettes in the American Southwest. The peak photographs best from U.S. Route 163, where you can pull off and frame it against wide open desert sky, with the flat scrubland in the foreground giving a strong sense of scale. A wide angle lens in the 16-35mm range works well for capturing the peak alongside the expansive landscape, while a telephoto can isolate the craggy summit detail. Golden hour is ideal, especially at sunrise when warm light catches the rock and long shadows stretch across the desert floor. Sunset can also be dramatic if storms are building to the west. The pullout area is easy to access by car, and you can walk the roadside shoulder to adjust your framing; keep in mind this is Navajo Nation land and visitors should be respectful.
