Totem Pole and Yei Bi Chei

These two slender sandstone spires rise dramatically from the Monument Valley floor, with the Totem Pole stretching nearly 500 feet tall and the thinner, more delicate Yei Bi Chei standing close beside it. The formations reward patience and careful framing; shooting from a low angle looking up emphasizes the sheer height and isolation of the spires against the open sky, while stepping back to include the surrounding red desert floor gives a sense of scale. Early morning light rakes across the sandstone and deepens the rust and orange tones, while golden hour before sunset produces a warm glow that separates the spires from the background. Access requires a Navajo Nation permit and a guided tour or a high-clearance vehicle on unpaved roads, so plan ahead. A wide-angle lens works well for dramatic sky compositions, and a telephoto lets you isolate the texture and layering in the rock faces. (Monument Valley, Arizona, United States)
