Merrick Butte
Merrick Butte is a towering sandstone formation rising dramatically from the rust-red desert floor of Monument Valley, and its position between the two Mitten Buttes makes it a key element in one of the most iconic landscapes in the American Southwest. You can frame it as a standalone subject or use it as a natural anchor in wider compositions that pull in the Mittens on either side, giving your shots a sense of depth and scale. A wide angle lens in the 16-35mm range works well for sweeping landscape shots, while a short telephoto lets you compress the buttes together for a striking layered effect. Sunrise is the prime time to shoot, when warm golden light rakes across the red rock and long shadows define the texture of the formations. Access is through the Navajo Nation park entrance, and the valley drive road puts you at multiple vantage points without requiring a guided tour. (Monument Valley, Arizona, United States)
