Eye of the Sun

Eye of the Sun - Photo by Bernard Gagnon1 / 1

This striking natural arch sits within the Navajo Nation lands of Monument Valley, framing a perfect circle of sky through a sandstone wall and earning its name from the way light passes through it like a giant eye. The keyhole composition practically frames itself, so focus on lining up a clean shot through the opening, using the arch as a natural border around whatever sky, mesa, or distant landscape sits beyond it. A wide angle lens, something in the 16 to 24mm range, lets you include the surrounding rock texture while keeping the opening prominent. Golden hour light, especially in the late afternoon, warms the red sandstone dramatically and creates strong contrast. Access requires a Navajo Nation permit and a guided tour or approved self-drive on the Valley Drive loop; the terrain is rough and sandy, so plan accordingly and wear sturdy footwear if you need to hike to the arch.
