West Mitten Butte is one of Monument Valley's most iconic sandstone formations, rising dramatically from the desert floor with its distinctive thumb-shaped silhouette that makes it instantly recognizable. The classic view from the visitor center area frames both Mitten Buttes together, but isolating West Mitten on its own gives you a cleaner, more striking composition, especially when you use the flat valley floor as a foreground element. Shoot from a low angle to emphasize the scale of the butte against the sky, and look for cracked earth or desert scrub to add texture and depth in the foreground. Golden hour is essential here, as the warm red light saturates the sandstone and the long shadows define every ridge and ledge. Sunrise is particularly dramatic, with soft pink tones before the sun clears the horizon. A focal length between 50mm and 135mm works well for isolating the formation without losing context. Access is via the Navajo Nation park road, which requires a fee and may need a guided tour for certain viewpoints. (Monument Valley, Arizona, United States)
