The Aventine Keyhole is one of Rome's most beloved hidden gems, a small brass keyhole set into the gate of the Knights of Malta priory on the Aventine Hill that frames a perfectly centered, long-distance view of St. Peter's Basilica dome. You are essentially looking through a tunnel of manicured hedge, with the dome sitting precisely in the center of the keyhole opening, making for a truly surreal and iconic composition. The shot works best in the late morning or midday when the dome is front-lit and the hedges inside the garden are bright and green. Bring a standard or short telephoto lens in the 50mm to 85mm range and get your eye close to the keyhole to fill the frame. Expect a short queue, especially on weekends; the wait moves quickly and you will have a few seconds to compose your shot before stepping aside. (Rome, Lazio, Italy)
