Tucked behind the Aurelian Walls near the Pyramid of Cestius, this intimate walled cemetery is one of Rome's most quietly beautiful and photogenic spaces. Cypress trees, climbing ivy, and weathered marble headstones create a layered, atmospheric scene that rewards careful composition. Look for the grave of John Keats, marked by its simple stone and often surrounded by flowers, or frame the Pyramid of Cestius rising above the cemetery wall for a distinctly Roman juxtaposition. Overcast days work exceptionally well here, softening the contrast between the bright marble and dark greenery; midmorning on a cloudy day gives you even light without the harsh shadows that direct sun creates between the trees. A 35mm or 50mm lens suits the intimate scale well. The cemetery is small and requires a small entry donation; visit on a weekday to avoid crowds and move through the narrow paths freely.
