Balls Head Lookout
Balls Head Lookout sits on a bush-covered headland in Waverton, offering one of Sydney's most expansive and underrated views across Lavender Bay toward the Harbour Bridge and the CBD skyline. Unlike the crowded southern shore vantage points, you get a slightly elevated, north-facing perspective that captures the full arch of the bridge with city towers stacking behind it. Sunrise is the standout time to visit, with warm light hitting the eastern faces of the buildings and the harbour surface catching a golden glow. A wide angle lens in the 16-35mm range works well for including both the bridge and skyline in a single frame, while a telephoto lets you compress the layers of the city for a tighter composition. The lookout is reached via a short walk through bushland from Balls Head Road, and the flat rock platform at the edge gives you a stable place to set up a tripod.
