Basilica di Santa Maria della Salute
Sitting at the entrance to the Grand Canal, this 17th-century baroque basilica is one of Venice's most recognizable landmarks, with its massive dome, ornate stonework, and dramatic position rising directly from the water. The classic shot is from Ponte dell'Accademia, where you can compress the canal, gondolas, and surrounding buildings into a single frame with the church anchoring the background; a short telephoto lens in the 85 to 135mm range works well for this. Getting closer, shoot from the Punta della Dogana waterfront to capture the steps descending into the canal, especially when gondolas or vaporetti pass through. Golden hour light hits the white Istrian stone beautifully, and foggy winter mornings add an atmospheric quality that separates your shots from typical tourist photos. The church is accessible on foot from the Salute vaporetto stop, and the wide steps leading up to the entrance make a strong foreground element. (Venice, Veneto, Italy)
