Bettmerhorn Viewpoint
Bettmerhorn sits above the car-free village of Bettmeralp in the Swiss Alps, offering one of the most dramatic views of the Great Aletsch Glacier, the longest glacier in the Alps. From the viewpoint, you can frame the sweeping ribbon of ice cutting through the surrounding peaks, with the Bernese Alps providing a powerful backdrop. A wide-angle lens works well for capturing the full scale of the scene, though a short telephoto lets you compress the glacier and layered ridgelines into something striking. Morning light is ideal, when the low sun casts long shadows across the ice and warms the surrounding rock faces. Take the cable car up from Bettmeralp, then follow the trail toward the summit for elevated angles that put more sky and glacier in frame. The 30-minute hike to the top adds even higher vantage points worth the effort. (Bettmeralp, Valais, Switzerland)
