About Borj El Baroud
Borj El Baroud is an old ruined watchtower sitting right at the water's edge on the long sandy beach just south of Essaouira. What's left of the stone tower has slumped down into the sand over the years, and at high tide the waves wash right up against it. It's a busy stretch of beach with a variety of unique shooting subjects ranging from horses galloping along the shoreline, to camel trains plodding past or quad bikes kicking up sand on the dunes behind. Just offshore you can see Mogador Island, home to an old 19th century prison that now sits abandoned. Today the whole island is a protected nature reserve for Eleonora's falcons, so you can only photograph it from the beach. Even though the beach is often busy there is still lots of space to spread out and experiment with various compositions. You can try framing the tower with the island in the background, or wait for a horse (or camel) to pass by to create a unique sense of scale. Late afternoon and sunset are the best times to be here, when the low sun comes in off the ocean and lights up the old stone. After you are done capturing the tower ruins and beach, take some time to explore the Dar Sultan Palace ruins in the dunes nearby. (Essaouira, Marrakech-Safi, Morocco)
