About Dar Sultan Palace

Dar Sultan Palace is a set of royal ruins sitting half buried in the sand dunes just outside the village of Diabat. It dates back to the 18th century and has been traced back to Sultan Mohammed ben Abdallah, the same sultan who built nearby Essaouira. Today it is a quiet maze of crumbling walls, roofless rooms and arched doorways that have been slowly filled in with sand. The dunes around it are dotted with low scrub and wind-bent trees, and you can hear the Atlantic Ocean rolling in to the west. It's a fun spot to wander with your camera. You can experiment with framing one room through the doorway of another or getting low to highlight the ripples of sand drifting across the old floors. There's no fee to access these ruins and no fences, but please remember to be gentle with the old walls and don't climb on them. The ruins are slowly shrinking every year as the sand dunes slowly reclaim the whole area. This whole area is quite easily accessible with by taxi to Diabat or as part of a walk down the beach. If you are coming from the beach you will only be able to cross the river at low tide. While you are here you can easily pair it with a stop at the river estuary next door and stay for sunset over the beach. (Diabat, Marrakech-Safi, Morocco)
