About Oued Ksob River Estuary

The River Estuary at Diabat is a photogenic spot where the Oued Ksob river winds its way through the dunes to meet the Atlantic, just on the outskirts of Essaouira. Instead of running straight out to sea, the river spreads into shallow pools and sandbars across a wide stretch of soft sand, and the water changes a lot with the seasons and the tides. This is the perfect spot for bird photography, with gulls and spoonbills often feeding in the shallows. From late spring into autumn, Eleonora's falcons come over from Mogador Island to bathe in the pools, which is a real treat if you are lucky enough to catch them. The road bridge over the river makes a nice high spot to look down the channel, and a longer lens will let you get close to the birds without disturbing them. Since the river runs out toward the ocean in the west, the evening light on the water and sand is lovely here. When you are planning your shooting outings keep in mind the river can only be crossed on foot during low tide. When you are finished capturing the river and wildlife, take some extra time to explore the Dar Sultan palace ruins in the dunes just to the south. (Diabat, Marrakech-Safi, Morocco)
