About Skala de la Ville
Skala de la Ville is the long sea bastion running along the northern edge of Essaouira's old medina, built up high on the rocks above the Atlantic Ocean. Walking along the top you'll find a long row of bronze cannons still aimed out to sea, many of them made in European foundries with old engravings you can still make out. The far end the walls rise into the big square North Bastion, which fans of Game of Thrones might recognize as the city of Astapor. Below you, the waves pound against the dark rocks, while the white houses of the medina crowd right up against the inside of the walls. Getting low and shooting along the line of cannons gives you the perfect spot to experiment with using leading lines to pull the eye out toward the ocean, or the bastion looks amazing from down on the rocks too. Sunset is an amazing time to be here, when the sky glows over the Atlantic and the old stone often turns golden. Make sure to pause and take a peek at the little woodworking shops tucked into the base of the walls on your way up. (Essaouira, Marrakech-Safi, Morocco)
