About City Walls
The Historic Essaouira Medina Walls wrap around the old town of Essaouira. The walls were originally built in the 1760s when Sultan Mohammed ben Abdallah rebuilt the city as a major port, and the whole area is now a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The best stretch to explore is the Skala de la Ville, a long sea bastion where a row of old bronze cannons still point out over the water. Many of the cannons came from European foundries and if you look carefully you can still spot engravings on some of them. Below the ramparts, waves crash against the dark rocks. The line of cannons make a great spot to experiment with using leading lines out toward the sea, and the old stone walls and watchtowers are perfect to pair with the rooftops stretching out behind them. Since the bastion faces out over the ocean, sunset is the perfect time to be here as the sky lights up over the water. (Essaouira, Marrakech-Safi, Morocco)
