Bronck Family Cemetery
Tucked behind the Bronck Museum complex in Coxsackie, this small colonial-era burial ground holds the graves of one of the Hudson Valley's earliest European settler families, with weathered 17th and 18th century headstones set against a backdrop of old stone farm buildings. The aged slate and sandstone markers, many with carved death's head motifs and faded Dutch inscriptions, make for compelling close-up detail shots, while wider compositions can bring in the historic barn structures for context and depth. Overcast days work best here, as soft diffused light prevents harsh shadows and lets you pull texture from the worn stone surfaces. A macro or short telephoto lens in the 50 to 100mm range is ideal for isolating individual markers. The cemetery is part of the Bronck Museum grounds, so visit during museum hours and stay mindful of the intimate scale of the space. (Coxsackie, New York, United States)
