Carbide and Carbon Building
Rising from Michigan Avenue in the heart of Chicago's Loop, this 1929 Art Deco tower is one of the most visually striking buildings in the city, with its polished black granite base, deep green terra cotta shaft, and gold leaf crown that catches light beautifully against a blue sky or at dusk. Shoot from across the street on Michigan Avenue to capture the full vertical sweep, using a wide-angle lens and keeping your verticals straight or intentionally tilted for a dramatic perspective. The gold detailing at the top glows warmly in the late afternoon sun, and blue hour is especially rewarding when the illuminated crown pops against a deep navy sky. Get close to the base to emphasize the rich black granite texture and ornate bronze details. The lobby of the St. Jane Hotel is also worth stepping inside for Art Deco interior shots.
