Carter Lake
Carter Lake is a quiet, reed-fringed freshwater lake tucked inside the Oregon Dunes National Recreation Area, surrounded by shore pine, Sitka spruce, and Douglas fir that reflect beautifully onto the calm surface. The lake's small scale and forested edges make it ideal for intimate compositions, and you can work the shoreline to frame tree reflections against the water with a wide to standard zoom in the 24-70mm range. Early morning is the best time to shoot, when mist often sits on the surface and the light filters softly through the conifers before any wind picks up and breaks the reflections. Overcast days also work well here, keeping contrast manageable and bringing out the greens in the surrounding forest. The campground gives you direct access to the water, and you can walk the perimeter to find cleaner foreground elements like reeds or exposed roots at the water's edge.
